Given all the protests around the world, the unrest brewing here with our own government, and the war fatigue our country has been feeling, I think it's fitting we remember this 4th of July what vision our Founding Fathers had for America.
I am Jicarilla Apache, and it's safe to say my heritage has not really gotten along with my culture as an American. I have seen the freedom deprived from the native sons and daughters of this land, so that foreigners can demand freedom for themselves. I like to think I'm more open minded than to fall to bias. The Founding Fathers were keenly aware of the social and political drawbacks of their times. The Constitution was written keeping change in mind. They knew their children, if educated, would do better for themselves as time passed. Freedom for all was their message. The ability to keep what you work hard to get.
This country is far from perfect. In fact, time will see us with a dramatic change soon enough, I feel. But the message of the Founding Fathers could never be more relevant and clear: Freedom. That the sons and daughters of Liberty must spend a lifetime of eternal vigilance protecting liberty and her domain. That the Altar of Sacrifice has claimed the lives of many, so that those who live can know freedom and peace from war. That where tyranny lives, freedom can not.
